Germany social media new law bans Freedom of Speech

Germany social media comes under new law against the hatred spreading posts. Also, the law shall include fake news and illegal material.

She will be the first country to enforce such law. Therefore, the country shall control the flow of information through social media.

However, under the law, a website has to remove hate speech, fake news or any illegal material quickly. And the controlling authority shall send the site a notice to remove the suspected material.

In fact, the law gives a time of 24 hours to any network to remove law-breaking material. Despite this, any site did not act within time; it shall pay fines up to 50 million euro.

In addition to it, social network and media sites with more than 2 million members fall under the law.

Therefore, the new law’s provision shall attract to Facebook, Twitter and You Tube mainly. Reddit, Tumblr and Russian social network VK might become target as well.

Also, the provisions could catch other sites such as Vimeo and Flikr.

The Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz (NetzDG) law was passed at the end of 2017. The authority considered the law, when call to police social media spread fake news.

Such fake news and racist material affected several high-profile cases.  The government has said, “the social media should act fast to regularize their content”.

According to Germany’s justice ministry, citizens would take forms available on its site. NetzDG would come to know of such violated content through these forms.

Adding further, the ministry has extended time for post removal in complex cases. For this purpose, the ministry has provided a week time to networks.

Facebook has already recruited several hundred staff in Germany to deal with content. Such staff is monitoring what people post.

The law has raise controversy in Germany. Many people say that this law shall lead to curtail free speech and censorship.

Along with Germany, politicians have sharply criticized social sites in the UK. They call it a “disgrace”.

The European Commission has published guidelines for social network. Such guidelines shall help in removing hateful material rapidly.
