Imaam Hussain did not know “KARBALA” purchased land on 2nd Muharram

Imaam Hussain reached the land of “KARBALA” on second day of the holy month of Muharram. Imaam Hussain and his companion tasted the martyrdom at the place on the tenth of Muharram.

Whereas, History marked the event on the second day of Muharram as beginning.

On the second day of Muharram, Imaam Hussain got into land of Karbala. Also,  he led the Hussaini Karvaan on that day.

Great Imaam Hussain did not know the name of the place of Karbala upon his arrival. He asked his companions about the name of the place. An old man, from amongst the members of the Karvaan, told name of the place to the Imaam Hussain.

An old man said, “This is the land of Karbala”.

One of the famous companions, Hur, gave a piece of advice to the Imaam. Hur said to Imaam, “We should stay here. Because we can get water from the nearby river Furat”. He led the horse riders in the karvaan.

When Imaam asked the question about the place, people told him the meaning. The people said, “Karbala represents the place of grief and sorrow.”

Imaam found the meaning of the place suitable to their stay. Imaam ordered his companions to put up tents at the land of Karbala.

He told his companions, “This is the place where we will shed our blood in name of Allah (God)”.

He called for the elders of “Banu Asad”. He purchased the land of Karbala from Banu Asad. However, Imaam returned the possession of the land to the people of Banu Asad afterward.

So, the people of Banu Asad sold the land for sixty thousand dirhams (60,000) to the Imaam Hussain.

According to the accord, the people of Banu Asad made three promises for the possession of the land of Karbala.

The grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Hussain, took three promises from Banu Asad. He said, “Oh people of Banu Asad! Bury our dead bodies when we would embrace martyrdom”.

Secondly, the Banu Asad will never do farming on this land.

Thirdly, when our decendants or followers came to the place of Karbala, the Banu Asad will tell them about our graves.

In addition to it, the people of Banu Asad will also hold our followers as guest for three days. Therefore, the people of Banu Asad have kept their promises even today.

Anyone who goes to Karbala treated as guest for three days now-a-days.
